Some of the items on our agenda for the three days were:
- MADE Museum
- Two days at The Wesleyan School – learning 1850s style!
- Aura Sound and Light Show
- Learning about the way people lived in 1850 and how it impacted Melbourne today
- Walking the diggings and learning about different occupations
- Gold Panning
Ma’am was very impressed with the way in which our class ‘got into the act’ and played the parts of children on the diggings. It was a hands-on way to immerse ourself in the 1850s and learn by doing.
It would be remiss not to thank a few people for our experience. Firstly, to Ma’am (Glenda Young), for giving us an authentic experience in The Wesleyan School and schooling in the 1850s. It was tough! However, we all learned so much from you, enjoyed the activities, and enjoyed how you cared for us and made us laugh. Also, to Miss Verde and Mr Nichol, who spent time with our class throughout the three days. Without you, our camp experience wouldn’t have been so positive.
We have spent the following weeks applying what we learned to create our diorama, a representation of the 1850s Gold Rush.
