Week 1 Student Blogging Challenge

Hi Everyone,

I am Miss Quodling, 5QG’s teacher and this is my avatar. I created it with the help of my class last year using Cartoonify. They thought it looked a lot like me. I have dark hair and green eyes. I love the theatre and am a bit theatrical and so I have added stars in the background. I hope you like it.

What do you look like?

Welcome to 5QG, 2020

It has been a great start to the year in 5QG. 2020 looks like it is shaping up to be one of the best! All 5QG children have settled into class and we are ready and raring to go for an action-packed year.

I wonder what we are going to get up to this year?

Blogging challenge around the globe

5Q has decided to join the Student Blogging Challenge throughout the month of October. We are really looking forward to making connections with classes and students around the world. If you are visiting our blog, or an Australian blog for the first time – welcome!

I am Miss Quodling, 5Q’s teacher and this is my avatar. I created it with the help of 5Q using Cartoonify. It looks a lot like me. I have dark hair and green eyes. My class felt I should wear a pink turtleneck top because I often wear clothes like that. I am a little theatrical and so I have added stars in the background.

Feel free to connect with any of the 5Q students, or with our class by commenting on this post. We have just come back from camp and are eager to share our stories. Feel free to ‘drop us a line’ and ask us about it.

Tell us about you and your class below in the comments!

Sovereign Hill – Eureka!

Year 5 recently embarked on a journey back in time to the Gold Rush and explored life in the 1850s at Sovereign Hill. It was a busy three days yet fun was had by all! We explored, questioned and uncovered many interesting facts about the past and came to understand that life in the past was extremely difficult.

Some of the items on our agenda for the three days were:

  • MADE Museum
  • Two days at The Wesleyan School – learning 1850s style!
  • Aura Sound and Light Show
  • Learning about the way people lived in 1850 and how it impacted Melbourne today
  • Walking the diggings and learning about different occupations
  • Gold Panning

Ma’am was very impressed with the way in which our class ‘got into the act’ and played the parts of children on the diggings. It was a hands-on way to immerse ourself in the 1850s and learn by doing.

It would be remiss not to thank a few people for our experience. Firstly, to Ma’am (Glenda Young), for giving us an authentic experience in The Wesleyan School and schooling in the 1850s. It was tough! However, we all learned so much from you, enjoyed the activities, and enjoyed how you cared for us and made us laugh. Also, to Miss Verde and Mr Nichol, who spent time with our class throughout the three days. Without you, our camp experience wouldn’t have been so positive.

We have spent the following weeks applying what we learned to create our diorama, a representation of the 1850s  Gold Rush.

Have you ever been to Sovereign Hill before?

What PLAs did you use?

What are some facts you know about the Ballarat Gold Rush & Eureka Stockade?

Book Week – Oliver Phommavanh Visit

It’s Book Week!  A wonderful week to explore everything related to reading, writing and everything else bookish.

To kick off Book Week, 5Q had a visit from super popular author, Oliver Phommavanh.

Sensible photo

Year 5 have been enjoying Oliver’s books in Book Chat, with favourites being:

  • ConNerd

  • Thai-riffic!

  • The Other Christy

  • Don’t Follow Vee (brand new book!)

Oliver taught 5Q many awesome tricks to write funny stories and students completed lots of fun activities designed to fire up the creative juices.

Double trouble activity
Silly photo!

What is one thing you learnt from Oliver about writing?

Term 2 Happenings

Time flew past in 5Q in Term 2.

Earlier in the term, we competed in House Cross Country. All Houses performed really well with the final winners being Burnet. Well done, everyone!

We even had time to have some fun along the way!

Then towards the end of the term, the Year 5 Enterprise unit culminated in the annual Year 5 Market. Many weeks were spent planning, designing and creating products to sell at the market. We raised over $6000.00 to support the JMB Foundation, which supports young people with acquired brain injury. What a fantastic effort!

Awesome Ads

5Q have been learning about persuasive writing and techniques throughout Term 2. This week, we have been looking at persuasive print ads.

We studied some powerful and popular advertisements that we see on billboards and in newspapers every day. Print ads use techniques such as:

  • Purposeful vocabulary
  • Lighting
  • Colour
  • Camera Angles
  • Body language
  • Symbols
  • Special Effects

Here are the print ads 5Q created for a random product. Which ad hooks your attention and which persuasive techniques and devices have they used?

Mark Wilson is coming to Carey!

Next week, the Year 5s will be lucky enough to have Mark Wilson, a talented author and illustrator, visiting them as part of the Carey Celebrates Literature Festival.

Mark is best known for his picture story books about war, animals, convict children and extinct animals.

In preparation for this event, the Year 5 students have been  exploring Mark’s work and websites about him.

In the comment section, leave a response that addresses these points:

– Something new you learnt about Mark Wilson from exploring the websites.

– A question you’d like to ask Mark at the literature festival.
